How it works
Music can have a pulse that feels like a regular beat. Longer and shorter sounds, stronger and softer sounds, and rests combine with that pulse to create different rhythms.
A completely regular pattern can feel stable, while a sound that arrives where it is not expected can create surprise or a sense of swing. Tempo is the speed, while rhythm is the pattern of sounds; they are not the same thing.
