Why are backups needed?
The short answer
Backups keep copies in another place or medium so data can be restored if the original is damaged or lost.
How it works
Keeping a backup only next to the original can lose both to one failure or disaster. Testing restoration is also important.
A familiar example
Sync is useful, but an accidental deletion may sync too, so it differs from a backup with history.
