Why do echoes happen?
The short answer
An echo occurs when sound reflects from a wall or mountain and reaches the ear after the original sound.
How it works
Sound travels at a finite speed, so a farther surface creates a longer delay. In a small room, reflections overlap and sound more like reverberation.
A familiar example
In a concert hall, surfaces and materials are designed so reflections do not overlap too much or get absorbed too quickly.
