Why does laundry dry faster in the wind?
Short answer
Wind carries away the humid air next to the fabric and replaces it with air that can take up more water vapor. This makes evaporation continue more easily.
How it works
Water in wet laundry leaves the fabric as water vapor. Without much air movement, the air right next to the cloth becomes humid and slows the transfer of more water into the air.
Moving air removes that humid layer and brings in less humid air. Water can then keep moving from the fabric into the air, so the laundry dries faster.
Key point
Wind is not the only factor. Temperature, sunlight, humidity, and the thickness of the fabric matter too. On a very humid day, even moving air may not dry laundry quickly.
