Why does the print on a receipt fade over time?

The short answer

Many receipts are made from thermal paper rather than ordinary paper printed with ink. The paper has a heat-sensitive chemical coating, and a receipt printer heats only selected spots in that coating to create the text.

After printing, heat, light, rubbing, and time can change the condition of the thermal coating. The printed image may become weaker, the background may change color, or the contrast between the text and the paper may shrink. That is why the receipt becomes hard to read.

In 30 seconds

In the direct-thermal method commonly used for receipts, tiny heating elements in the printer warm the paper one dot at a time. Only the heated spots turn dark, forming letters and barcodes.

This method does not need ink or an ink ribbon, so it can print quickly. But the printed surface itself remains sensitive to heat and light. If a receipt matters, scan or photograph it soon and keep the original away from heat, strong light, and heavy rubbing.

What is thermal paper?

Thermal paper is paper coated with a heat-sensitive layer. The exact structure differs between products, but the layers can include a base paper, a thermal layer containing color-forming materials, and protective coatings on the surface.

Because the surface reacts to heat, the printer can create letters without spraying ink or pressing an ink ribbon against the paper. Producing a receipt quickly is useful at a checkout.

How is the text printed?

Inside the printer is a row of tiny heating elements. A computer represents each letter as a pattern of small dots, and the printer briefly heats only the elements needed for those dots.

The thermal layer contains a dye that can change from a colorless form to a colored form, along with a material that helps that change happen. The reaction occurs only where heat is applied, so many dots together look like dark letters or lines.

Why does it become hard to read later?

Thermal paper is not designed to remain completely unchanged after printing. If the printed surface is exposed to strong heat, areas outside the original text can also change color, or the contrast of the image can fall. A hot car or a place near a heater can provide the conditions for this to happen.

Light can matter too. Long exposure to direct sunlight or strong lighting can discolor the paper or make the printed image lighter. Repeated rubbing in a wallet, or scratches on the surface, can also damage the printed area.

Depending on the paper, contact with substances containing solvents or plasticizers can contribute to discoloration or deterioration. So “it disappeared with age” usually describes several factors together: temperature, light, friction, surrounding materials, and the type of thermal paper.

A familiar example

A receipt that was easy to read just after shopping may become grayish or brownish and difficult to distinguish if it is left on a car dashboard or near a sunny window for a long time.

Even on one receipt, the parts rubbed by folding or taking it in and out of a wallet may become hard to read first. The letters are not simply sinking into the paper one by one; changes to the printed surface make the boundary between the text and the paper less clear.

In fact…

The term “thermal printer” can refer to more than one printing method. In addition to direct thermal printing, which heats the paper itself, thermal-transfer printing uses heat to move material from a ribbon onto another paper or film.

That means not every heat-printed item fades in exactly the same way. Its resistance to light and heat depends on the media, the printing method, and whether the material was designed for long-term image storage.

A common misunderstanding

The dark text on a receipt is not always ink that has soaked into the paper like ballpoint ink. With thermal paper, the text is created by a reaction in the heat-sensitive layer on the surface.

It is also not true that every thermal receipt becomes unreadable quickly. Some thermal papers for labels or tickets are designed to keep images longer or to resist light and rubbing. The durability of a receipt depends on the paper and its storage conditions.

Looking more closely

In direct thermal printing, heat travels from the printer’s heating elements into the paper and creates the image there. The small number of consumable parts and the lack of ink refills make the method useful where many receipts need to be produced quickly, such as at a checkout.

For uses that need images to last longer, manufacturers can offer thermal papers with better resistance to light, heat, or abrasion. Keeping an important record electronically as well as on paper is a practical way to account for the material’s limits.
